Residential

Therapeutic Treatment Program

Burlington utilizes a holistic team approach to treatment that promotes the mental and spiritual wellness and behavioral stability required for successful community reintegration. Individual programming is based on identification of each youth’s strengths and challenges, modification and redirection of interfering behaviors and generalization of targeted behaviors. The treatment teams assess the resident, plan, implement, and evaluate care. Treatment includes individual and/or group therapies, behavioral management, recreation, experiential learning programs, and psychiatric and general medical services.

Offered at:

Beckley Campus – Located in Beckley and Raleigh County. The Beckley Center’s two gender specific Level III cottages each accommodate 10 youth, ages 11 – 17. One Level II cottage also houses 10 youngsters of the same range of ages.

Burlington Campus – Situated on 40+ acres in the rural community of Burlington, WV, the Burlington Campus is surrounded by rolling hills, mature oak trees, and a small stream that runs through the front of the property. The cottages also overlook a large, open field that serves as a spacious play area. A baseball field and playground are located adjacent to the cottages. The Burlington Center’s on grounds school is located on the campus, as well as a gymnasium complete with locker rooms and cafeteria. The Burlington Campus consists of three residential programs. Rees-Headlee and Kitzmiller are the boys and girls level 3 programs that serve 10 youth each between the ages 8-18. Mill Meadow, a level 2 program that serves 7 boys ages 12-18 and Keyser Group Home, a level 2 program that serves 7 girls ages 12-18, are also considered part of the Burlington campus, but are located seven miles away in Keyser, WV. Brenda’s House, a level 3 program that serves 10 boys and girls ages 5-10 located 17 miles away in Old Fields, WV is also considered part of the Burlington campus.

Level II group care is a therapeutic setting which targets youth with confirmed DSM-IV diagnosis that manifests in moderate-to-severe adjustment difficulties in school, home, or the community. These diagnoses can include disruptive behavioral disorders, mood disorders, conduct disorders, etc. These youth cannot function in a public school setting without significant psycho-social and psycho-educational support. The goals of intermediate residential treatment programs are to develop interpersonal skills and remediate social skill deficits and disruptive behavior patterns which preclude living in a less restrictive environment.

Level III services provide a highly structured and intensively staffed (1:3) 24-hour setting that targets youth with DSM-IV diagnosis such as severe conduct and emotional disorders. As a result, these youth are unable to function in multiple areas of their lives (home, school, community). It provides a highly structured program with formalized behavioral programs and interventions designed to create a therapeutic environment. All activities and interventions applied are utilized with the goal of stabilizing the child’s serious mental condition. The focus of intervention is on psycho-social rehabilitation aimed at returning the child to an adequate level of functioning.

The West Virginia Department of Institutional Education Programs administers on-grounds schools at both campuses.
