Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is an evidenced based home visitation program utilized in all 50 States as well as in several other countries. The program provides services to children and families prenatally through kindergarten. PAT is completely free with no income requirements. The program focuses on child development, parent-child interaction, development centered parenting, and family well-being.

Burlington’s PAT program serves families in Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, and Pendleton Counties.

Our Vision:
All children will develop, learn, and grow to realize their full potential.

Our Mission:
To provide the information, support, and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial years of life.

We Believe:
The early years of a child’s life are critical for optimal development and provide the foundation for success in school and in life.

  • Parents and caregivers are their children’s first and most influential teachers.
  • Established and emerging research is the foundation for caregiver and family support curricula, training, materials and services.
  • All young children and their families deserve the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of any demographic, geographic or economic considerations.

Our evidence-based curriculum encompasses the following components:

Personal visits
All visits are personalized to meet the needs of your child and family. Visits can be completed in home, virtually, or over the phone! Your parent educator will provide you with research-based information to help you make good parenting decisions. An age-appropriate activity will be brought to stimulate your child’s development. Your family will also receive a children’s book to read and keep to grow your at home library!

Screenings
Regular screenings during visits will make sure your child is healthy, safe, and developing on track. Screenings include developmental (ASQ 3), social-emotional (ASQ-SE2), health, vision, and hearing.

Resources
Connections to community resources to support your family’s needs.

Group connections
Group connections create a network for you and other families to interact, learn, support, and grow together as parents.
