Specialized Residential Support for Adolescents with Coexisting Needs

The Coexisting Disorders Program at Burlington United Methodist Family Services provides structured, therapeutic residential care for adolescents with coexisting intellectual and behavioral health needs.

This 8-bed residential program serves males and females ages 12–17 who require a Level II placement and benefit from individualized supports that address both behavioral and developmental challenges. The program is designed to be completed within 9–12 months, with a focus on stability, skill development, and successful participation in school and community life.

Program Overview

Each resident receives a highly individualized program tailored to their strengths, needs, and goals. Services are coordinated by a multidisciplinary team and may include:

  • Basic living skills development
  • Individualized behavior support plans
  • Comprehensive treatment planning
  • Tutoring and academic support
  • Recreational and structured leisure activities
  • Social skills development
  • Community service opportunities
  • Individual, group, and family therapy

Programming is designed to promote independence, emotional regulation, and positive behavioral growth while supporting long-term success.

Program Details

Education & School Support

All residents attend public school in the local community, including:

  • Daniels Elementary School
  • Shady Spring Middle School
  • Shady Spring High School

Burlington provides in-school support staff to assist residents within the public school setting, ensuring consistency between residential programming and educational expectations.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Coexisting Disorders Program, adolescents must:

  • Be 12–17 years of age
  • Have an IQ in the 55–84 range
  • Meet behavioral criteria for a Level II placement

Each referral is carefully reviewed to ensure the program is an appropriate and supportive fit for the adolescent.
